Press Release of 21 March 2022
The tenth edition of Global Money Week dedicated to the financial education of young people is underway
Over 100 participating Countries and over 200 initiatives in Italy, coordinated by the Edufin Committee
The tenth edition of Global Money Week begins. From 21 to 27 March, public and private institutions, associations, universities and research institutions in Italy and from over 100 Countries around the world will involve young people in over 200 financial education initiatives. The theme of Global Money Week 2022 is: “Build your future, be smart about money”. An essential message for the new generations, which highlights the important link between the management of one’s financial resources and the building of one’s future.
The campaign is promoted by the OECD-Infe and coordinated in Italy by the Committee on the Planning and Coordination of Financial Education Activities (Edufin Committee) with the organisational contribution of Banca d'Italia.
Global Money Week is an international event that aims at educating young people, from early childhood to university years.
During this week, we will talk about savings, financial planning, payment, investment and insurance instruments, choices and behavioural finance and, with an eye to the future, social security, circular economy and sustainability.
This year the calendar of the Italian GMW - which can be consulted on the Edufin Committee’s website www.quellocheconta.gov.it - offers more than twice as many initiatives as the previous edition, a sign of the importance that the commitment to the development of financial education has assumed in our Country today.
The activities will be designed to be suitable for different age groups. For the little ones there will be workshops, such as those dedicated to the planting of a vegetable garden and the creation of fictional characters, fairy tales, stories told in the traditional way and also in digital format. For those who are older, on the other hand, webinars and conferences, video tutorials, challenges and online quizzes on financial, insurance and social security topics will be offered. The Week continues with online and in person lessons, podcasts, theatrical performances and film clubs.
Global Money Week 2022 will also host an international event in our Country co-organised with Dutch Money Week and CeRP-Collegio Carlo Alberto. In this seminar, short volumes of financial education will be presented, which are part of a larger international project dedicated to young people.
“Educating children and young people about finance means educating them to plan for the future, preparing them for the great personal and social challenges that await them: from longer life expectancy, to increased risks, to a rapidly changing labour market. Global Money Week reminds us that these challenges affect all young people around the world and that financial education is a formidable tool for dealing with them,” said Annamaria Lusardi, Director of the Edufin Committee.
Magda Bianco, Bank of Italy member in the Edufin Committee, added: “Global Money Week speaks to young people, and Bank of Italy has chosen to do so through the world of school, because school is for everyone: it reaches boys and girls, from families of all economic backgrounds, anywhere in the country. And precisely because it is for everyone, school can reduce the differences between students, even when it comes to financial skills”.
The Committee on the Planning and Coordination of Financial Education Activities is made up of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, Bank of Italy, Consob, Covip, Ivass, Ocf and the National Council of Consumers and Users.
The Edufin Committee is present with the @ItaEdufin account on Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram and Facebook.
