Gianfrancesco Romeo has been the Director General for Market, Competition, Consumer Protection and Technical Regulations of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) since April 2023. The role includes responsibility for managing relations with the Competition and Market Authority, supporting the Guarantor for price surveillance, relations with the Institute for the Supervision of Insurance Undertakings, as well as supervision of national technical standardisation bodies.
The Director General is also responsible for consumer policies, legislation and projects. In this capacity, he is delegated president of the CNCU, National Council of Consumers and Users, an institutional body composed of consumer Associations, based at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, where the body meets for plenary sessions.
He has been Director General of the Directorate General for Resources, Organisation, Information Systems and Budget of MIMIT since June 2020 and before that, since September 2019, he was Director of the Legislative Office – Offices of the Director of Collaboration of the Minister of Economic Development.
He was Head of the Legislative Sector of the Minister for Southern Italy for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers from January to September 2019.
He was President of the Board of Auditors of Unioncamere from July 2010 to 2019.
He was Chairman of the Management Committee of the Guarantee Fund of Insurance and Reinsurance Brokers at CONSAP from 2008 to 2018. Effective member of the Advisory Unit for the implementation of the guidelines for the regulation of public utility services (NARS) since May 2023.
Italian member in the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML) since May 2023.
He currently also holds the office of representative of MIMIT within the Board of Directors of ACCREDIA – Single Accreditation Body.
Member of the Board of Auditors of Unioncamere from 2019 to 2022.
Member of the Ecolabel-Ecoaudit Committee at the Ministry of the Environment A.P.A.T./ISPRA (from December 2006 to July 2013).
Member of the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Metrological Research, in Turin (from January 2006 to August 2011).
Member of the interministerial technical table on road safety in June 2010.
Member of the “Study Commission on Administrative and Fiscal Federalism of the new Title V of the Constitution” established by Decree of 11 June 2003 of the Rector of the Higher School of Economics and Finance.
He has been Director of MIMIT since 2002, following the 2nd Management Training Course-Competition of the Higher School of Public Administration.
He graduated in Law from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1994; he obtained the qualification to practice the profession of lawyer at the Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria in 1997; Winner of the 2nd Management Training Course-Competition held in 1999-2001.
Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic since 2007.
